Endgame

This brings to a conclusion our five weeks together–or nearly so. It’s been quick! Seven weeks in the fall (and I will be seeing most of you in the fall, either in ICM 522 or in ICM 501) will seem like a lifetime by comparison. As always, first time through a course is sometimes rough, and thank you for being my guinea pig group, as always!

I have three requests.

The first is to remind you to be on time with your final two examples. Because there is potential for confusion–after all, these will look very much like your other papers–if you could also email them (or links to them) to me at writing@halavais.net, that would be great. I will reply with an indication that I have them. I’m providing an extension until Tuesday at 10am for everyone, but at that time, I grade and submit grades. Be sure you have everything in, because missing a paper will mean a failing grade.

Second, I think you should have received a request to do a teacher evaluation. Please do take a moment to go to qeval to fill out an evaluation.

Finally, please reply in the comments below with questions you would like us to address in the second summer meeting on the 27th. We are largely agenda-free–we have a relatively short period of time and want to make sure we address your concerns. So please do suggest topics, and comment on others’ suggestions. I’ll be circulating this link to the dean and faculty, so we can prepare a response and discussion.

Thanks! And enjoy the short break before we meet up again.

I just wanted to let you know that I really enjoyed this class and can’t believe that it’s almost over. It truly did fly by.

I’m looking forward to the summer meeting on the 27th. I do have one question. We were informed that a second Flash course would be offered the first week of the Fall semester. I’m guessing this would be an elective? From our first phone conference of this course, we figured out that we wouldn’t have to double up on our classes in order to finish up with this program next summer. I registered for the Fall semester before I received the announcement about the Flash course, so I never registered for it, and now I feel like it’s too late (and too expensive to take more than one course at a time). Do you know if this will be offered again?

I think my question above also goes along with the fact that I don’t know our course schedule… I don’t know what classes I still need to take or when. I would really like to have a schedule that I can plan around and budget for.

I would appreciate it if you could pass my questions on to be addressed at the meeting. I hope you have some free time to enjoy the rest of your summer! I’m looking forward to next semester.

I also would like to know the course schedule for the ICM program. Which classes are required to graduate which classes are electives…. blah blah blah.

Also, are there any courses offered over winter break? This would provide an opportunity to take classes without doubling up, as well as, allow students to complete the program sooner.

Thanks!

I’m in the same boat as Karen. I would like to take the advanced Flash class, but I already registered for the 2 classes offered in the fall…and considering these classes aren’t cheap and it is an elective, I never pursued it further…

I too would like a schedule for the next year so I know what it is we are taking and when we’re graduating etc.

Random question and this have been addressed already but what “class” are we? I feel like we’ve been the guinea pigs for a few classes (that’s not a bad thing). Are we the first fully-online class or have there been a few before us who have already graduated?

I would like to discuss the Capstone Project. Written guidelines would be helpful. I would like to take the Advanced Flash course, but it is being offered at the same time two core courses are being offered. Is it possible to have that course offering next summer?

I have questions similar to the ones above, as well as a few others.

1) What’s the mystery with the course schedule? I was told at the beginning that we would kind of follow along with the same courses together and any deviation would be difficult, which was fine, except for the fact that we are supposed to take electives at some point. Which brings up the next question…

2) When is it advisable to take our elective courses? Which electives will help us accomplish our varied goals related to our final project and/or paper?

3) Why is it that the courses don’t flow into one another and/or are not geared toward the shorter summer schedule? Learning Dreamweaver in five weeks was insane; a Flash course would have made more sense. Also, why did we have Web programming BEFORE Dreamweaver. It would have made more sense to start with Dreamweaver and then expand our skills by learning Web programming. Also, except for a little use of Photoshop in the Flash course and a bit of Flash required in the Writing for Interactive Media course, it seems like there is too little effort integrating the various courses into an overall program. When can we expect it all to come together?

4) Lynda.com is a great resource, but we’re paying for professors to help us through these courses at lightning speed. Can we use the Lynda.com site but also get some special help through Web tutorials produced by QU professors (such as what Dr. Halavais provided in the Web programming course)?

5) Can we always get written as well as video tutorials? Different people learn in different ways. For word people, following words is easier than following videos.

6) I am wondering how much of the capstone project has to be produced by me alone? I want to do a major Website project in which I farm out some of the video shoots (and perhaps production) to friends. It seems to me that we were told the main goal of the course was to teach us to be Web producers, which will require farming out certain technical and/or artistic chores in the real world. What about in the QU world?

7) When do we have to declare our intentions for the final project, how much help will professors be able to impart and what kind of timeline, if any, will we have to follow? Are extensions ever possible?

8) Will we have a project adviser? Are we supposed to have a personal adviser? If so, who is it?

9) I’m about to buy a new computer. Do you advise Mac or PC, assuming I’ll want to follow up after QU by creating a Website with Flash and video? Can you connect me to sites for student discounts?

10) Does QU have a Ph.D program in ICM, or is it contemplating one? Where would you suggest I go to get further training in Web design or programming after QU?

11) Assuming QU gets regularly barraged with requests for students who can manage Web site content, how does such information get transmitted and when are grads most likely to be targeted?

I won’t be at the 2nd year orientation, but I’d love to hear answers to tiptoe’s questions.
