Tell me how to do something. That’s about it.
It would be good if it were somehow related to your “beat,” but in any case should be something sufficiently difficult that it is a challenge. “Rinse, apply, repeat” is hard to improve upon. (Well, that’s not true. “Rinse, apply, rinse; repeat previous three steps one time if necessary,” is wordier, but more accurate.)
Please avoid numbered steps. Paragraphs should be sufficient. And tell me enough that I actually know what I’m doing: don’t treat me like a robot. After reading your pieces, I should be able to make something or do something that I was unable to make or do before your instructions.
The key here, obviously, is to make it interesting. Anyone can tell you how to do something; few can do so in such a way that you are excited about doing it and enjoy the process of learning about it.
